Why the charity started

Amélie Durão Lewi

Amélie was the inspiration behind The CATS Foundation. After she was diagnosed with Tay-Sachs in March 2011 at 15 months of age her parents Dan and Patricia set the charity up later that year to provide support to families impacted by both Tay-Sachs and Sandhoff disease.

Sadly, Amélie lost her battle to Tay-Sachs in December 2017 at the age of 8, but her death, along with all the other children we have lost to these cruel diseases continue to inspire the work that the charity does.

Since The CATS Foundation was founded over 10 years ago, it has grown in the work it does. We have helped establish multiple consortiums,, both on a European and Global level to bring together the Tay-Sachs and Sandhoff community.

It has always been a goal of the co-founders Dan and Patricia to beat these diseases and they won’t stop their work or commitment to the community until we have a treatment for Tay-Sachs and Sandhoff disease.
